Part of the city-wide Sheffield Showcase weekend, Reel Steel present a double-bill of classic films set on the mean streets of New York city at Sheffield’s Abbeydale Picture House: the 1979 classic The Warriors, back-to-back with John Carpenter’s Escape From New York (1981).
In 1979, a street gang known as The Warriors must fight their way from Brooklyn to their home turf on Coney Island, when they are falsely accused of assassinating a respected gang leader.
Having to cross the territory of rival gangs in order to reach safe ground, The Warriors slowly make their way across the city, but between them and safety stand 20,000 cops, and 100,000 gang rivals. They’ve got one way out, one chance, and one night.
Based on the 1965 novel of the same name, The Warriors is a classic cult action thriller.
We then jump forward into New York’s future – in 1997, crime is out of control, and New York city is now a maximum security prison.
The rules are simple: once you’re in, you don’t come out. But when the President’s plane crash lands into the centre of the city, Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell), a fearless outlaw, is forced into a rescue mission to bring the President, and his cargo, out of this land of undesirables alive.
One of several collaborations between legendary director John Carpenter and Hollywood favourite Kurt Russell (which include 1982’s The Thing, and 1987’s Big Trouble in Little China), Escape from New York is a classic of the genre.
