This Bank Holiday Saturday August 27th, a double-bill of cult classics featuring bands doing battle with the forces of evil comes to Sheffield’s Abbeydale Picture House – Miami Connection (1987), and The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984).
From the writer of Big Trouble in Little China (John Carpenter’s ultimate genre mash-up), comes a sci-fi adventure that went on to become one of the all-time cult hits of the 80s – The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension.
Peter Weller (best known for playing 80s sci-fi icon RoboCop) is Buckaroo Banzai, a Physicist-Martial Arts Master-Secret Agent-Rock Star, who has just made history with his invention, the Oscillation Overthruster.
The Overthruster allows him to travel to the 8th Dimension, but this draws the attention of the Red Lectroids, an alien race (led by Christopher Lloyd – best known as Doc Brown in Back to the Future) who have plans to take over the world. Buckaroo Banzai, and his team of secret agent band musicians ‘The Hong Kong Cavaliers’ (whose members include Jeff Goldblum), must stop them before it’s too late.
In Miami Connection – motorcycle ninjas tighten their grip on Florida’s drug trade, getting rid of anyone who dares move in on their turf. The martial arts rock band ‘Dragon Sound’ have had enough, so they embark on a roundhouse kicking wave of crime-crushing justice.
When not performing their hit song “Against the Ninja”, the fearless synth-rock band are kicking down the drug world’s nastiest criminals.
A sincere 80s b-movie that was re-discovered and restored for release, gaining a new generation of fans, with a surprisingly wholesome message around the power of friendship and unity… and also Taekwondo.
A pair of films which went on to become two of the decades defining cult movies.
See this double-bill at Sheffield’s Abbeydale Picture House, August Bank Holiday weekend.
