On June 25th, 1982, Blade Runner and The Thing were released in cinemas on the same day.
To celebrate this joint 40th Anniversary, Reel Steel present a double-bill screening at Sheffield’s Abbeydale Picture House – exactly 40 years to the day – on June 25th, 2022.
.
Unquestionably one of the greatest and most influential films of all time, Blade Runner is one of cinema’s most powerful and enduring films.
Set in the smog-choked dystopian Los Angeles of 2019, Detective Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) is given the task of terminating a group of ‘replicants’ (bio-engineered humanoids), who have escaped to Earth seeking their creator for a way to extend their short life spans.
With its film noir stylings and cyberpunk aesthetic, Blade Runner is a visually spectacular science-fiction thriller.
The Thing, set in the winter of 1982, follows a research team at a remote Antarctic research station who discover alien life buried in the snow. Soon unfrozen, the shape-shifting alien takes host of members of the team, picking them off one by one in a bid to survive and escape, in this landmark sci-fi horror from director John Carpenter.
Featuring some of the most stunning practical effects sequences ever created, The Thing has rightly become one of the most celebrated horror movies of all time.
The 25th of June 1982 was, in retrospect, an important day in the history of cinema (even if most critics and audiences didn’t realise it).
Two science-fiction films released on the same day, now recognised as two of the most ground-breaking and influential films in the history of the genre.
Celebrate this joint 40th Anniversary with a double-bill screening, exactly 40 years after their original release.
